Hahaha, this was funny in a terrible I-feel-like-I-shouldn't-laugh at the second video kind of way.
In all honesty, I appreciate the Dove ads, but it's still marketing ... still actors ... still playing on the emotions. It does seem that a lot of down-playing one's own physical appearance is a display of false modesty or fishing for affirmation (not always, but especially in younger people). It's nice to feel beautiful and have good self-esteem, but I'd venture to say that deep down, the same feelings of self-love in how we naturally wish to preserve our bodies along with mankind's nature after the fall ... very few truly believe they're ugly.
Yes, we are critical of our appearance (:guilty:) and there is always someone more beautiful. For that reason, it's good to realize that not everyone else scrutinizes us in the same way we scrutinize ourselves.
I know! Well, Ill have to say, the only way I could justify any of this is that I am hoping these were real people & not actors. Either way, I found it to be fascinating how poorly women look at themselves & how the men portrayed here are full of pride, or maybe just have more confidence?
Wow, very interesting! Though I feel kind of bad for the guys, even though they were a tad vain. ;) They didn't look THAT bad! A garden gnome indeed. =D
As a girl, it is hard not to be critical of your looks, especially in a beauty driven age, but it is important to remember that we are made in God's image, if He wanted us to look differently He had the full power to make those changes. But the way He has made us is perfect. We.are.beautiful.in.His.eyes. Very hard to remember, sometimes, but very true.
I read somewhere that when we are critical of our looks, or anything about us we can't change, it's like getting a gift from a friend, but being critical about it and complaining about it to that friend. Ugh. We wouldn't do that to our friends, so why do we do that to God? He thinks we're perfect and beautiful, who are we to tell Him no and complain?
Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. What one deems beautiful, another may say "ugly" or unattractive. This is where God comes in, He has made us beautiful in His image & has given us all different tastes.
I was highly disturbed at the reaction of the men. Especially the man who kisses his bicep (Lord have mercy) Self love anyone???? And how the one cried at the remarks made by the women. (the ladies were mean!)
I noticed also that the video where the women were sketched, they wouldn't dare have had a man critique! If they had men in there responding to the sketches & if they would be brutally honest, the ladies wouldn't be able to take it & would be horrified if a man said something negative, yet women were allowed to critique the men & they were just vicious about it. Couldn't say anything nice at all.
Proves that women are quite catty & quite judgmental when it comes to men. Not only were there looks torn apart, but because of their features the mens character became synonymous with their looks! The one woman called the man, "rapey". Imagine if a man would say anything so negative to a woman? Their would be blood!!!!
I just found all of this so fascinating. Unreal. I can look at a man that I do not find attractive in the least & still come up with, "he has nice eyes" ect.... These woman were brutal.
The men saw themselves as KINGS! hahaha... its so very crazy.
Why didn't they have any other guys comment on the guys looks is my question? I mean I know most guys aren't observant as girls but they they had guys commenting on the girls looks right?
Finally got to watch these videos, it is interesting. The videos do make good points for people in general but of course not all girls think they are ugly and not all guys think they are stunning. I can can say for myself I don't think too much about appearances either way. If someone were to ask me what I thought of my looks I would say that I'm and average looking guy. It does seem like they picked guys that were arrogant and prideful to prove a point. I think probably most worldly guys do think this way, but I would hope that if this this was done to Christian guys of them would not be this prideful.
Wow! I was pretty horrified at the guys video. Partly because of their arrogance and pride, but also because those women (can they even be called that) were just plain rude. I mean, what they saw was NO where near what they looked like? They were very nice looking guys? (but very prideful)
What I find interesting is that you have women. They look at themselves and think they aren't all that great. But they look at other women and think they are beautiful. Then they turn around and think men are ugly. Maybe it comes from how you view yourself? You tell yourself that any other woman is prettier than you are, so thus any woman is automatically prettier, rather than seeing we are each beautiful for being us.
I don't know, that make sense? I just was so encouraged and so discouraged at the same time.
Maybe those guys got bad "reviews" because of their attitude. We really see folks as how they are- kind, rude, sweet, bitter, etc. Really, we don't notice the physical aspects as much- we really see "them".
I did love the women's one. How often do we downplay ourselves!!! Like one said, it impacts life because of how you see yourself. I don't think we should be taken up with it and be obsessed about it, but we should be positive about ourselves and how we see ourselves. Man, that is a powerful video!!

The second video (of the guys) is a comedy making fun of the original.
